Where It All Began

Walking through Waterford Wines

Inventive and understated, Waterford Estate near Stellenbosch, South Africa, produces a superb range of ten, mainly red, wines. Unusually, the estate only gives half its terroir to vines and the rest to nature, arguing that one cannot exist without the other.

Apart from tasting the wine, you can also walk through the other half of the estate on their three Porcupine Walks, accompanied by your picnic hamper and Waterford Wine, you can choose from three walks of varying intensity.

You can also take a Wine Drive Safari (where you are driven around the estate, tasting wine from each vine as you pass it) and ending back at the tasting room for a wine and chocolate pairing.

We’d recommend staying at Longfield House, a collection of three beautiful self-catering cottages set in glorious gardens with a large pool at the foot of the Helderberg Mountains. Prices from R2 100 per cottage per night ($147 / £116 / €140)
