Liz and I are still in the Eastern Cape this week, so we thought we’d post about another malaria-free safari option.
If you want to splash out and really do this safari thing properly, consider Shamwari. It’s a five-star, ultra luxury private game reserve with several choices of lodges within it.
Shamwari continues to win award after award not just because of its high standard of accommodation and food but also its unrelenting efforts (and successes) in real conservation (not just conservation for the sake of tourism).
It’s also the largest of all the private reserves in the EC. Despite the very high attention to detail and good staff:guest ratio, Shamwari can feel a bit more corporate, more ‘at arm’s length’ than the smaller, owner-managed lodges and reserves. Some of our guests have said with all that luxury, you do sometimes forget that you’re actually in the middle of the African bush, and on safari! We therefore recommend combining Shamwari with something like The Elephant House, Sibuya or Woodbury Lodge (more on those later this week)
Prices at Shamwari start at R6 600 (US$520)per person sharing per night (which is fully inclusive) and as such is excellent value for five-star.
