It’s always such a pleasure to discover/learn of somewhere new, particularly in KZN, the ‘tropical province’ of South Africa.
Karkloof Safari Villas is a five-star offering about 45 minutes from Pietermaritzburg, which is itself about 40 minutes north of Durban. Set in the rolling countryside of the KZN Midlands, and within easy reach of the beautiful collection of villages and small town that make up the Midlands Meander, Karkloof offers a very interesting combination of wellness, retreat and safari all at one establishment.
Whilst many safari lodges now offer a spa, the wellness concept here has been extended into the entire venue. Private classes in meditation and yoga are offered right on site, but in addtion, it’s not only possible but easy to take your yoga, your run, your bike-ride out in the splendid semi-tropical ambiance of the 3,000ha grounds. Choose from wooden walkways built over numerous babbling brooks, through the lush forests, or the grassy river banks leading to many splendid waterfalls, all filled with abundant birdlife, mammal, amphibian and butterfly life (over 98 different butterflies live in this area!) and a total absence of predatory game. Truly a return to nature.
The villas themselves are equally magnificent, but in an ecologically sound and sensitive way. Numbering only 16, each villa is fully equipped with private decks, lounges, bedrooms and bathrooms and all are fully detached from each other to ensure total privacy.
All food is sourced from Karkloof’s own farm or neighbouring farms which is yet another extension to their wellness concept.
Prices start at R8 100 per night (US$675). Karkloof works really well in conjunction with our forthcoming 10 – day Miracles of KZN journey that explores the Ghandi and Shaka Zulu legacies in South Africa.
