Morgan's Bay to Haga Haga Hotel (14km)
Haga Haga as a village was started in the early 1920’s when farmers from the hinterland acquired farms here for winter grazing. They would move everything, goats, cattle, sheep etc by ox wagon down to the coast for 3 – 4 months. To cross the beach they would unspan one team of oxen and hook them onto the other team, hence the work Haka Haka which is the Xhosa word to “hook on”, this is how Haga Haga got its name. The hotel started during the depression years as a 5 bedroom boarding house by “Daddy” Hobbs. A couple of years later White Waves Inn was developed. The original Chemaly cottage was bought and this formed the main building, kitchen, lounge, dining room. In the early 1960’s the Brill family, ex-traders from the Transkei, bought both the hotels and combined them to form one complex. On the 1 April 1975 Sandy and Neil Chemaly bought the hotel, arriving here to lighting plants, paraffin fridges and coal stoves.

Depart Morgan Bay Cliffs: Begin along dramatic 57m-high dolerite cliffs with ocean views. Look out for dolphins and whales. Double Mouth Nature Reserve: Scenic coastal trail leads here. Prepare for a possible Quko River crossing (waist-deep if recent rain). Treasure/Bead Beach: Explore this historic shipwreck site with cornelian beads and Ming porcelain in the shingle. Black Rock Promontory: A dramatic coastline steeped in maritime history. Shell Beach & Marsh Strand: Hike past shell-lined shores and wetlands. Arrive in Haga Haga: End the day in this peaceful coastal village.
To the west of Morgan Bay, the impressive Morgan Bay Cliffs jut out of the ocean to a height of 57 metres. The trail goes along the tops of the rocky doleritic headlands from here down to Double Mouth Reserve. If you are lucky, gives you bird’s eye view of whales or bottlenose dolphins. Depending on the time of year & tide, a potential river crossing awaits at the Quko River just beyond Double Mouth. It is a generally a blind estuary (i.e. not open to the ocean) during autumn & winter, but still good to be prepared for a waist deep crossing if there has been a lot of rain prior.
After crossing the Quko River, the trail makes its way to the famous Treasure or Bead Beach. The promontory ahead is Black Rock, the graveyard of several ships. Cornelian beads and Chinese blue and white ming porcelain sherds may be found in the shingle and grass lining the rocky shore.
After hiking along ‘shell beach’ you will pass some Marsh strand before coming up to Haga Haga.

Haga Haga to Chintsa Depart Haga Haga: Choose between a tidal rock platform route with gullies and pools (low tide only) or a scenic climb to Whale Lookout and down to Pullens Bay. 5 km Rocky Shoreline: Boulder hopping and pebble beaches—slow but rewarding with shells and tidal pools. Cape Henderson Beaches: Reach long, flat sandy stretches past Bosbokstrand with views of vegetated dunes. Estuaries & Final Stretch: Pass three typically closed estuaries before reaching Crawfords Lodge (north bank) or Buccaneers (south bank) at Chintsa.
Today is a particularly spectacular hike day. Although one of the longest days, there are long stretches of flat beach at the end.
From Haga Haga you can choose to walk along an exposed wavecut platform with small gullies & rock pools to explore before reaching the waterfall at Rooiwal (possible at low tide) OR take the path up to the Whale Look Out point and then down to Pullens Bay (worth the climb!).
From Haga it is about 5kms along interesting rocky shoreline, where some boulder hopping, and pebble beach negotiation is required. It is slower going but the rockpools and many shells along the way provide interesting diversion.
After about 5kms, the long beaches of Cape Henderson await. After Bosbokstrand, it is sandy beach all the way with high vegetated dunes. You will pass three beautiful estuaries which are normally closed river mouths. Crawfords Lodge is on the north banks of the Cintsa Estuary and Buccaneers is located on the South bank
