Where It All Began

Game reserves – small is beautiful!

A week or so ago, we posted on the benefits of visiting the smaller nature reserves in South Africa over the larger and better known ones.

Continuing with that theme, you might like Masebe Nature Reserve in Limpopo which is small but has some very interesting attractions and good facilities.

The striking ‘sugar loaf’ rock formations of the reserve are one of the main reasons people visit (they are up to 300m high) and its thought they had particular spiritual significance to the early San. It’s got a visitor centre where you can learn about the San rock art in the region and can be guided by a local San community member if you wish.

The wildlife in the area is more focused on the non-predatory animals of which the most unusual is the tsessebe, which is actually most closely related to the bovine family but looks like an antelope.

This reserve is a public/community partnership between the Limpopo Provincial Government and seven villages of the Bakenburg community – as such, sustainability is at the core of the reserve.
