“We have more to learn from animals than animals have to learn from us.”
Anthony Douglas Williams
Bob’s release into the ocean began with a flight to Durban, where he was set free in the Indian Ocean at a secluded beach along the KZN east coast. Before his release, Bob spent a week at Ushaka Marine World, acclimatizing to the warmer water and being fitted with a state-of-the-art satellite tracking device for research purposes. For as long as the device remains attached to him, Bob will be monitored, providing valuable information about turtle behaviour and places that Bob explores.
Bob’s time at the Two Oceans Aquarium captured the hearts of many visitors, who were inspired by his indominable spirit and determination. Despite suffering from midbrain damage, Bob was able to reclaim some of his wild behaviours, essential for his return to the ocean. The South African Association for Marine Biological Research team is now following Bob’s journey in the ocean and wishes him the best on his new adventure.

Bob’s story highlights the incredible resilience and strength of the planet’s wildlife and the importance of preserving their habitats. As Bob sets out into the big blue, we can all take inspiration from his story and do our part in ensuring a healthier future for our oceans and the creatures that call it home.
