Where It All Began

AI Policy

Acknowledging both the threats and the opportunities that AGI (Advanced General Intelligence) and ASI (Artificial Super Intelligence) bring to the planet, its people and all living things, we declare that:

  1. Whilst AI is currently fairly limited in what it can do and often gets things very wrong; most experts agree that AGI is less than ten years away and ASI may be less than fifteen years away. This makes this policy relevant to all our employees, clients and their families.
  2. AGI and ASI pose a special threat to human beings in that the purpose and relevance of billions of humans will increasingly become less important as machines come to do most human jobs better than humans can do themselves (and this is already happening).
  3. AGI and ASI pose an even greater threat as humanoid robots become commonplace, which, when coupled with AGI and ASI, will remove the purpose and relevance of blue-collar workers around the globe such as cleaners, security guards, drivers, couriers, dockers and so forth.
  4. Currently, as most of the control of the machines is in the hands of private corporations and whilst many machines will do things that benefit humanity at large, the end goal of the machines is to create profit for their owners. Accordingly, we cannot and must not assume that AI is harmless or politically neutral.
  5. Whilst there is a place for AI generated art, music and writing, we believe unless a human is involved in the entire creation of an image, video, piece of music or writing or anything else creative, whether by use of or assisted by a machine or not, AI-generated art is counterproductive to community, civilisation and society as it does not give purpose to humans, whether in its production or its consumption.
  6. AGI (but more importantly ASI) will soon have the ability to solve intractable problems like the provision of abundant clean energy or the eradication of hard-to-treat diseases. We support and celebrate the role of advanced machines in making easier lives and better environments for all living things, so long as the machines are at all times under the direction and control of humans who put living things before machines and profit.

Thus we determine that:

  1. We will never use an AI generated image or video in place unless we are unable to use one taken by a human photographer or created by a human artist, with or without the assistance of a machine.
  2. We will never use AI generated music or speech in any of our communications, whether for marketing or in contact with our travellers and colleagues in the travel industry. All our music and speech will be generated by humans, with or without the assistance of a machine.
  3. When we write content about the places we recommend, we may occasionally use AI to enhance or homogenise content to fit with the overall diction and register of the brands we own but always, our writing will at least initially be generated by humans as a result of an in-person visit.
  4. We will only ever recommend a place or an activity that we as your travel advisors and content creators have either visited in person or have tasked a human we trust and who shares our values to visit. We will never download copy, especially AI generated copy, from other sources and claim it as our own or upload copy created by AI to our own sites or profiles.
  5. We will seek to employ people from as diverse backgrounds as possible, bearing in mind the relative size of our company and the time and costs needed to skill up or reskill people into the roles we need them to fulfil.
  6. We acknowledge that AI has great potential to relieve humans of tiresome repetitive tasks in matters such as accounting, bookkeeping, invoicing and filing. We will only ever make use of AI to streamline and simplify processes which are dull and uninspiring for our colleagues.
  7. We will never use AI for communications or creative work as we believe these are roles that humans should and must inhabit.
  8. We acknowledge the opportunity that AGI and ASI has to create more secure environments for humans and support its use in the policing of our communities and streets, so long as it is always under the direction of a human or humans with sufficient skills and experience to task the machines with the right decisions.
  9. We acknowledge that machines will eventually be able to clean our offices or our own houses, mow our lawns, cut our hedges or take on any kind of manual labour. Knowing this, we will at all times seek to employ a human to manage and administrate the machines that cook, clean, cut and maintain.
  10. We acknowledge that AGI and ASI may be able to solve seemingly intractable problems such as clean energy production, water and food security, pollution, access to and the provision of healthcare and thus in fields where there is a clear and demonstrable benefit to humans and other living things, we support the use of AGI and ASI to improve the lives and living things.
  11. We acknowledge and accept that AGI will soon be able to drive all vehicles of all shapes and sizes perhaps better and more safely than a human. However, we will always campaign for a human driver be employed to manage the machines which direct the vehicle.
