Where It All Began

Travelling with children to South Africa

If you’re travelling to South Africa with children under 18, it’s essential to be aware of the documentation required by South African immigration officials. One of the most important documents is a full, original, unabridged birth certificate for each child.

Key things to know:

  • The birth certificate must be originalcopies are not accepted, even if certified or legally endorsed.

  • The certificate must clearly show the details of both parents.

  • Abridged certificates (which may only show the child’s or one parent’s details) are not valid for entry.

  • If only one parent is travelling or if either adult is not the child’s biological parent, additional documentation may be required. Please confirm requirements before departure.

Travelers have unfortunately been denied boarding or entry for not meeting these requirements, so it’s important to check your documents carefully.
