Where It All Began

Camp right on the beach!

It’s often a great source of surprise to visitors to South Africa that one can (and in fact should!) camp on the beach.  There are many campsites that allow you to drive either a 4×4 with a roof tent, as pictured above and easily rentable, right to the water’s edge.  Falling asleep to the sound of the waves and then waking up to the morning surf really is just unbeatable. Above is Kwass se Baai in the Namaqua National Park but there are many more closer to Cape Town such as Gansbaai Caravan Park.

If you don’t have a roof top tent, camping on the ground is perfectly possible but you can also upgrade at some campsites, like Victoria Bay which offers 38 stands in total, 20 of which have private ablutions and washing-up areas (so no sharing of showers and toilets like in some campsites).
